Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
This section is dedicated to the answers to the most frequent questions that we get concerning CNC machining and sheet metal fabrication. Everything from the procurement of raw materials right through to machining, surface treatment, assembly, and even boxing is done in-house. We do not share your project with third parties; therefore, we guarantee quality and timely delivery.
Q: What materials can be CNC machined?
A: A very wide range, including:
Metals: Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Steel, Brass, Copper, Titanium.
Plastics: ABS, Nylon (PA), Delrin (POM), Polycarbonate, PEEK, PTFE (Teflon).
Others: Wood, Foam, Composites, and even Machinable Wax for prototyping.
When it comes to the best material for your next project you should consider strength, weight, and the intended use of the material.
Q: What surface finishes are available?
A: Finishes can be applied for both aesthetics and functionality.
As-Machined: The part straight off the machine. Shows minor tool marks.
- Tumbled: It’s also called stone-washed, it could remove burrs, bring a smooth surface, parts look like dark gray.
- Bead Blasting: Gives a uniform matte or satin texture.
Anodizing: (For Aluminum) Creates a hard, protective, corrosion-resistant surface and can be dyed in various colors.
Powder Coating: A durable, decorative paint finish.
Plating: Such as Nickel or Chrome plating for hardness and wear resistance.
Polishing/Brushing: For a mirror-like or brushed metal appearance.
Q: Q: What is the difference between CNC Milling and CNC Turning?
CNC Milling: Uses rotary cutting tools to remove material from a stationary workpiece. Ideal for creating complex 3D shapes, slots, holes, and pockets.
CNC Turning: The workpiece is rotated at high speed while a stationary cutting tool removes material. Ideal for creating cylindrical or conical parts like shafts, bolts, and pulleys. Machines used for turning are called Lathes.
In short, cnc milling is for round simple parts, cnc machining is for complicates.
Q: What is the difference between 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis CNC machining?
3-Axis: The most common. The cutting tool can move in three linear directions (X, Y, and Z). It’s excellent for parts that don’t require complex geometry or undercuts.
4-Axis: Adds a rotational axis (usually around the X-axis, called the A-axis). This allows the workpiece to be rotated, enabling machining on four sides in a single setup.
5-Axis: The tool can move in three linear directions and rotate on two additional axes (A and B, for example). This allows for the creation of highly complex, organic shapes in a single setup, reducing time and improving accuracy for intricate parts.
In short, we would select the appropriate processing machinery based on the product’s application and complexity.
Q: What file formats do you need for a CNC machining quote?
A: We prefer 3D models in STEP or IGES formats, as they are neutral and retain robust feature data. For 2D drawings, PDF is standard. We can also work with native formats from many CAD software (e.g., .SLDPRT, .PRT, .IPT, .X_T).
Q: What is Design for Manufacturability (DFM)?
A: Absolutely! Our team can assist with the design phase of your sheet metal project, ensuring optimal functionality and manufacturability.
We encourage you to contact GY Machining if you have any further questions about CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, or our services.
Tolerances & GY's Capabilities
Q: What is a standard machining tolerance?
A: A standard machining tolerance is typically ±0.005 inches (±0.127 mm). This is achievable without special processes or significant extra cost. For many non-critical features, this is sufficient.
Q: What are the tightest tolerances you can hold?
A: With precision machines and careful process control, we can achieve tolerances as tight as ±0.0005 inches (±0.0127 mm) or even tighter for specific applications. Note that tighter tolerances significantly increase cost.
Q: What is the maximum part size you can produce?
A: This depends entirely on our specific CNC equipment. Our standard machines can handle parts up to [Your Company: Insert your specific bed size, e.g., 40″ x 20″ x 20″]. For larger components, please contact us to discuss your project.
Ordering Process
Q: How do I get a quote?
A: You can request a free quote by submitting your CAD files and drawings through our website. Please include material, quantity, finish, and any critical tolerances. We will typically respond with a detailed quote and any DFM feedback within 1-2 business days.
Q: What information do I need to provide with my design?
A: To get the most accurate quote, please provide:
3D CAD model (e.g., STEP, IGES) and/or 2D Drawing (PDF).
Desired material.
Quantity required.
Surface finish requirements.
Any critical dimensions or tolerances.
Q: Do you provide material certifications?
A: Yes, upon request, we can provide material certifications (C of C) for traceability, verifying that the raw material meets the specified industry standards.
Cost & Lead Time
Q: How much does a CNC machined part cost?
A: The cost is influenced by several factors:
-
Part Complexity: More complex geometries take longer to machine.
-
Material: Exotic metals (e.g., Titanium) or high-performance plastics (e.g., PEEK) are more expensive.
-
Quantity: Higher quantities reduce the cost per part due to amortized setup time.
-
Tolerances & Finishes: Tighter specs and secondary finishes add cost.
-
Lead Time: Rush services may incur a premium.
Q: How long does it take to get a part made?
A: Standard lead times are typically 1-2 weeks from the approval of the final quote and design. This includes programming, setup, machining, and any secondary finishing. Prototypes can often be turned around faster (3-5 days), while high-volume projects may require more time.
Q: Do you offer prototyping and low-volume production?
A: Yes! CNC machining is ideal for both rapid prototyping and low to medium-volume production runs, from a single prototype to thousands of parts. We can start with a quantity like 1.
