What is Black Oxide?
A Black Oxide finish is a chemical conversion coating applied to ferrous metals, alloys, and some non-ferrous materials (like copper or zinc) to create a thin, black protective layer. The process involves immersing the metal in an alkaline aqueous solution containing oxidizing salts, which react with the surface to form magnetite (Fe₃O₄), a black iron oxide. This coating enhances corrosion resistance, reduces light reflection, and provides a decorative appearance while maintaining precise dimensional tolerances (as it adds minimal thickness).
Black oxide coatings can be applied to steel, cast iron, magnesium, copper, and brass. The thickness of the black oxide coating depends on the type of metal and the method of application. Black oxide coatings can be applied with chemicals, heat, or electricity.
Black oxide is not a protective coating in itself, but it can be used in conjunction with other coatings, such as paint or oil, to improve the overall protection of the metal surface.
