Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is a corrosion-resistant alloy of iron, chromium and, in some cases, nickel and other metals. Stainless steels are steels containing at least 10.5% chromium, less than 1.2% carbon and other alloying elements. Stainless steel’s corrosion resistance and mechanical properties can be further enhanced by adding other elements, such as nickel, molybdenum, titanium, niobium, manganese, etc.

Titanium

Titanium has the lowest density of all metallic elements. Titanium is as strong as some steel but is only one-third the weight. Titanium’s strength-to-weight ratio makes it useful for many applications. Titanium alloys are 50% heavier than steel but 7-10 times stronger.

Steel Alloy

Alloy steels contains a wide variety of elements, each of which can enhance various properties of the material, such as mechanical thermal and corrosion resistance. Elements added in low quantities of less than around 5 wt.% tend to improve mechanical properties, for example increasing hardenability and strength, whereas larger additions of up to 20 wt.% increase corrosion resistance and stability at high or low temperatures.

Tool Alloy

Tool steel alloys are high carbon chrome steels containing differing amounts of molybdenum, cobalt and/or vanadium or other elements. Certain tool steels are engineered to withstand repeated high specific loads and impacts at ambient temperature with exceptional wear resistance – thus the name. Tool steels have high hardness and can maintain high hardness and red hardness at high temperatures, as well as high wear resistance and appropriate toughness.

What are the three types of machining processes?

The three main machining processes are milling, drilling, and grinding. Other operations falling into miscellaneous categories include shaping, planning, boring, broaching, and sawing. Now I will just introduce three main processes.

Milling

Milling is a common machining process, also known as cutting. It involves the removal of metal by using a rotating cutter. The cutter is mounted on a spindle attached to a motor. The cutter is fed with a workpiece and rotates at high speed. The cutter removes metal by forcing it against the workpiece.

Milling uses various materials, ranging from metals to plastics. Milling is used to removing metal from the workpiece.

Drilling

Drilling is an operation where a hole or opening is drilled into a workpiece. Drills usually consist of a drill stem fastened to a drill chuck or a drum chuck. The drill stem rotates when the drill chuck is tightened. The drill stem is usually made of hardened steel.

The drill bits are fastened to the drill stem and the drill stem. Drill bits can be of various shapes and are used to drill holes in various materials, including wood, plastic, and metals.

Drilling is a less expensive machining process compared to milling. Drilling can also be used to machine metal.

Grinding

Grinding is a machining process where hard materials are reduced to a finer level. Grinding is often performed on machine metal.

Grinding is a powdering or rubbing process. Grinding machines use grinding wheels, which consist of diamond or silicon carbide abrasive particles, as cutting material. These abrasive particles are fed to them by grinding wheels. The wheels consist of segments, which are bonded together by resin. The wheels rotate at a relatively high speed. As the wheel rotates, it feeds the abrasive particles to the workpiece.

The abrasive particles from the wheel are forced against the workpiece and grind it. The grinding process continues until the particles wear out.

What is the purpose of machining?

Machining can produce identical or nearly identical parts produced by casting or forging. Machining can also produce parts with intricate design features that would not be possible to produce through casting or forging. These parts are often needed for products that incorporate additions like electronics, sensors, or sensors.

The manufacturing industry uses machining to create the parts used to assemble the products. Machining can also be used to create parts that are used to test or inspect products.

When do you need machining work?
  1. Machining is used for making small or intricate parts.
  2. Machining can replace some processes, such as welding.
  3. Machining is used to make a variety of parts. Some common parts machined are gears, bolts, or bearings.

What are the best metals for accurate metal machining?

Accurate metal machining is best achieved with materials that are suited to CNC machining.

Because although it is possible to accurately machine even the toughest metals and alloys, some hard-to-machine materials can negatively affect machining accuracy.

The machinability of a metal refers to how easily a cutting tool can cut through it. Highly machinable metals can be cut quickly at low power, producing a high-quality surface finish without causing significant wear to the cutting tool.

Some highly machinable metals include:

  • Aluminum 6061
  • Aluminum 7075
  • Aluminum 2024
  • Stainless steel 303
  • Stainless steel 304
  • Brass C35300
  • Titanium Gr5 Ti-6Al-4V

In theory, a good CNC machine should still be able to cut a hard-to-machine metal, though it will require more time and power consumption.

But these hard-to-machine metals can have an indirect negative effect on accuracy.

Non-machinable metals can dramatically increase tool wear, and dull tools can reduce both the accuracy and precision of the machine.

Additionally, most customers want to find a good balance between speed and accuracy. If accurate metal machining demands extremely low cutting speeds because the metal is hard to machine, the project may not be worth the trouble.
