What is Tumbled Finish?
A tumbled finish (also called barrel finishing or vibratory finishing) is a mechanical surface finishing process used to smooth, deburr, polish, or texture metal, plastic, or composite parts. It involves placing components in a rotating or vibrating container (a tumbler) along with abrasive media, compounds, and sometimes water or lubricants.
Process:
- Parts are loaded into a tumbler with abrasive media (e.g., ceramic chips, plastic pellets, or metal grit).
- The tumbler rotates or vibrates, causing the media to rub against the parts’ surfaces.
- Over time, this action removes sharp edges, burrs, and imperfections while creating a uniform, matte, or satin-like texture.
Benefits to Tumbled Finish
The tumbler rotates or vibrates, causing the media to rub against the parts’ surfaces.
Deburring: Removes sharp edges and machining marks.
Edge radiusing: Softens corners for safer handling.
Surface smoothing: Reduces roughness for improved aesthetics.
Cleaning: Removes dirt, oxidation, or residual contaminants.
